SAN DIEGO: Top five US computer manufacturer Gateway has poached

John Spelich, director of global news and information at car

manufacturer Ford, to strengthen its global communications team.

Spelich, who leaves Ford after 11 years, will join Gateway as director

of worldwide corporate communications on 12 July. He will report to

Gateway vice-president of corporate communications Brad Shaw.

According to Shaw, the firm intends to recruit further communications

staff in the coming months. Gateway is based in South Dakota, but

Spelich will lead a team being formed out of San Diego. Shaw himself

only joined Gateway from Pepsi-Cola four months ago.

The main focus of Spelich’s position will be to promote the computer

firm to consumers through consumer media channels. Gateway is already

well known throughout the trade press.

Spelich is the second communications leader to leave Ford this year.

In February, Judith Muhlberg, a veteran of 22 years, left her position

as director of public affairs to become vice-president of communications

for Boeing.

Gateway has recently been in the news as a possible suitor for Earthlink

Networks, an internet service provider.

It is not clear whether Ford will fill Spelich’s appointment internally

or though an outside search, as PR professionals in the car trade

traditionally tend to come from within the industry.
