The charity is aiming to close down dozens of petrol stations throughout the course of the day.
The teams of volunteers, each named after an animal that is threatened by BP’s oil exploration activity, fanned out across the capital in their electric and hybrid cars at 5.30am, going to stations and disabling their pumps.
Greenpeace has chosen today because the oil giant is unveiling its latest results and is expected to announce Bob Dudley as the company’s new head to replace Tony Hayward, as PRWeek reported yesterday.

At 8.21am, Greenpeace claimed on Twitter to have already closed 46 petrol stations in London.
The protest today is part of a bigger campaign over the coming months that will promote the charity's message, which encourages BP to ‘go beyond oil’. The campaign will include lobbying politicians and transforming local communities.
The charity is also urging members of the public to write to Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers, to make the UK support a European law that restricts imports of the most damaging fuels.
Earlier this year, Greenpeace director of communications Ben Stewart was among a number of protesters to have scaled the BP building in protest at the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
