Opinion: From our Readers - Ethical standards vital for lobbyists' register

I welcome Austin Mitchell MP's new Commons motion on the introduction of a statutory register of political lobbyists on Monday.

Statutory registration of the lobbying profession is now on the way. It would be a travesty if it were introduced without a simultaneous requirement that those registering also adhere to a minimum set of ethical standards.

We strongly urge the Government to bring forward a statutory code of ethical practice simultaneously with any register. Self-regulation has been tried, tested and shown not to have earned the confidence of the public.

The statutory route is the only way forward for the profession.
