The UK’s second largest cable telephone and TV company Telewest

Communications has appointed QBO to handle consumer PR in the UK. The

account was won after a seven-way pitch that included the incumbent

Starfish Communications, and fees are in excess of pounds 100,000.

Alister Martin, a board director at QBO will head the account, reporting

to Tim Brill, Telewest’s first PR director (PR Week, 29 October,

1999).

Brill said that QBO would be closely involved with the launch of

Telewest’s new brand after it acquires Flextech in a deal to create a

pounds 12.5 billion media group. The deal was approved last month.

Consumer PR activity is being stepped up as the first interactive TV

services are rolled out in the UK. This year Telewest has already

launched three new services - an unmetered internet brand,

Surfunlimited; a cable internet service, Blueyonder, which allows access

up to 15 times faster than conventional methods; and an interactive TV

product.

Brill said there was an emphasis on ’differentiating services and

demystifying technology’ for consumers.

Telewest retains Citigate Dewe Rogerson for City PR and Text 100 for

business-to-business.
