Baird said of the new role: ‘The most exciting thing is the opportunity to develop a more integrated service, encouraging teams in different disciplines to work closer together.’
Baird has been head of news since 2003 and has worked in government communications since 1987. He led the devolution communications team in 1997 and became the first official spokesperson for the first minister in 2001.
Other roles have included being a press officer at the former Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) in Whitehall.
Baird reports to head of strategy and ministerial support Angiolina Foster and oversees a team of 70.
