Amazon.co.uk, the UK’s leading internet bookstore, has appointed
both a new head of PR and public affairs and a new agency.
Amazon has been seeking a PR director since September last year, the
position is now to be filled by Christina Smedley, head of consumer
marketing at Edelman PR Worldwide. She becomes head of PR and public
affairs, a director level position.
The Red Consultancy has been made Amazon’s main consumer agency
following the resignation of incumbent Joe Public Relations.
Since its launch in October 1998, the reseller has used JPR. However a
review including several consumer agencies was carried out prior to
Christmas with an agency appointed this week. According to JPR MD
Matthew Wood, the agency declined to repitch.
Last summer, Amazon lost both its MD and marketing director. Colleen
Byrum is currently acting MD, while David Osborne was appointed
marketing communications head towards the end of last year.
Amazon.co.uk is a wholly owned subsidiary of NASDAQ-listed Amazon.com,
which is the internet’s biggest book, music and video retailer.
