Northen Electric slashes four out of five PR jobs

The corporate affairs director at Newcastle-based utility Nothern

Electric, David Faulkner, who was awarded an OBE in the new year’s

Honours List, has now left the company amid anger in the PR department

at shabby treatment.

Faulkner, who won his gong for services to the community in

Newcastle-upon-Tyne, has been on leave since last November, when the

company responded to industry regulator Ofgem’s demands to cut prices by

announcing 500 job losses.

Faulkner’s deputy, corporate affairs manager Andrew Horne, is taking the

company to an industrial tribunal following his own departure last

November, claiming unfair and wrongful dismissal.

The company is losing four of its five remaining PR staff to voluntary

redundancy and its sole remaining PRO is public affairs manager Julian

Kenyon. It is not yet clear whether he intends to recruit fresh

staff.

- Among the other communications professionals named in this year’s

Honours List were John Lavelle, the executive director of the Institute

of Public Relations for 15 years until 1998 (OBE). He was joined by News

International’s communications trouble shooter Jane Reed (CBE), and

Clare Sillars, an information officer at Buckingham Palace (MVO).
