Wray makes the move to PR in September and will report to director of corporate comms Aileen Thompson.
He replaces Julien Cozens, who has been with the firm for ten years. Thompson said there were 'no details' on whether Cozens had a new role lined up.
Wray is a former staff writer for the Industry Standard magazine and previously worked as a financial reporter at the AFX News newswire.
He is no stranger to Vodafone's communications operation - earlier this year, Wray reported Vodafone was forced to issue a grovelling apology after one of its customer service staff broadcast an obscene message on Twitter.
On 5 February, Wray told Guardian readers: 'Instead of the usual helpful hints on how to make the most of its range of handsets or direct responses to individual customer service queries, VodafoneUK's 8,824 followers were treated to a message reading "VodafoneUK is fed up of dirty homos and is going after beaver".'
Rather than dealing with social networking strategy, Thompson suggested Wray would focus on new products and services. She said: 'Head of external comms is one of the biggest roles in my team. It is very important because it is about making sure that we are at the forefront of news coverage on our products and services, and carrying on the good work we started this year.'
