Diary: CEO earns his licence to fill at the new H&K bar

Hill and Knowlton’s joint CEOs David McLaren and Andy Laurence have double identities. Not only do they run one of the UK’s largest PR agencies, but both men are pub landlords. Landlords, that is, of the H&K agency bar. As they are not required to pull pints and mop up, running a bar has, to date, proved a carefree activity for them both.

Hill and Knowlton’s joint CEOs David McLaren and Andy Laurence have

double identities. Not only do they run one of the UK’s largest PR

agencies, but both men are pub landlords. Landlords, that is, of the H&K

agency bar. As they are not required to pull pints and mop up, running a

bar has, to date, proved a carefree activity for them both.

But all that changed when H&K decided to move offices to larger premises

on Theobalds Road in central London, and the two had to apply to Camden

Council for a new drinks licence. Disaster almost struck when it

transpired that Laurence would be on holiday when the council wanted to

hear H&K’s re-application for the licence.

Determined not to let his staff go thirsty, McLaren decided to approach

Camden council on his own, and managed to convince the council to make

him sole proprietor of the bar and H&K’s official publican. Now all that

remains is for the bar to be named. ’Any suggestions will be most

welcome,’ says Laurence.
