Universities UK and the Russell Group are already vociferous on the matter, warning of dire consequences for education standards and for the future of British discovery and invention.
For communications professionals, both in-house and advising, the funding crisis poses two primary challenges for those representing each establishment: the need for promotion - to differentiate and distinguish our top universities so they win funding and sustain academic standards; and the need for protection - to steer managers, academics and students through the maze of change management that will allow each body to work out how best to restructure or rethink their purpose to ensure their survival.
We can expect many more headlines and much more internal communication on these topics in the coming year.
