NEVADA: Nissan North America has moved quickly to fill its top PR

spot, following the departure of Jason Vines to Ford (PR Week, 25

February).

The company has promoted Debra Sanchez Fair from director of corporate

communications to vice-president.

Nobuo Araki, president of Nissan North America, told PR Week he did not

consider looking outside Nissan for a replacement. ’Sanchez Fair is a

very good leader,’ he said, adding that her familiarity with Nissan’s

’revival plan’ counted in her favour. The global plan was instigated by

Renault, which took a controlling stake in Nissan in March 1999, and

aims to revive both Renault’s and Nissan’s fortunes.

Sanchez Fair, who has worked at Nissan for ten years, reports directly

to Araki. Filling the corporate communications director post is Scott

Vazin, who has been promoted from corporate manager, public affairs.

Sanchez Fair said her major challenge is to maintain Nissan’s recent

positive PR momentum. While the US operation’s Japanese parent continues

to face major problems in its home market, North America has performed

well. In January, figures showed Nissan sales in North America up more

than 22 per cent on the previous year.

Sanchez Fair will oversee 22 corporate communications staff, spread out

among Nissan’s US headquarters in California, and offices in Washington

and Detroit.
