Hill and Knowlton has been appointed by US-based mobile phone

advertising firm Spotcast Communications to handle its European media

relations, in the run-up to a summer launch in the UK and France.

The six-figure fee account was won after a two-way pitch against Text

100.

Spotcast offers a discounted mobile phone service in exchange for

listening to ten-second advertisements before the subscriber’s call is

connected.

H&K will oversee communications as Spotcast begins to sign up European

partners, and will start by introducing Spotcast to the European

telecoms and media industries. It has already introduced the Spotcast

board to UK opinion formers in London. Virginia McLean, board director

at H&K, will lead the account.

’As different bits of the programme develop, we will change the team. It

is largely business-to-business at the moment but will increasingly

become more consumer-oriented,’ she said.

H&K’s appointment follows its hiring by the WAP Forum to launch wireless

application protocol services on mobile phones in Europe by the end of

the year (PR Week, 18 February).
