The Communication Group is offering free consultations to members

of its trade association client in a bid to generate new business in the

construction industry.

For client the Construction Products Association, TCG is following the

method widely-used in the legal profession, of giving CPA members half

an hour of free advice to see if they need further public affairs or

lobbying assistance, which would then be charged for, albeit at a

discounted rate.

TCG was appointed by CPA last month along with Biss Lancaster, which

handles PR, (PR Week, 21 January). The account is run by TCG managing

director and former Downing Street civil servant Mark Adams. TCG has now

hired Leigh Tomkins, parliamentary affairs officer at the British Retail

Consortium, to run the project. Adams hopes that Tomkins’ trade

association experience will help her understand CPA members’ needs. She

starts work next week, reporting to Adams.

In a letter to the CPA’s 150 members, Tomkins asks: ’Are you always

reacting to political events rather than shaping them? Do you know how

to ensure the interests of your organisation are taken into account when

government policy is formed?’ The letter then makes the half-hour free

consultation offer.
