DIARY: Mother love drives PRO to fundraise for cancer research programme

PR people often turn their skills to raising money for charity, but rarely with the determination of Luther Pendragon consultant Josie Dobrin.

PR people often turn their skills to raising money for charity, but

rarely with the determination of Luther Pendragon consultant Josie

Dobrin.

Dobrin discovered three years ago that her mother was suffering from

myeloma, a bone marrow cancer for which there is no known cure. After

finding that very little research into the disease was being undertaken,

Dobrin began fundraising. Last year, she collected #56,000 for the

International Myeloma Foundation, enough to support two research

projects.

Last week, she kicked off this year’s efforts, raising #15,500 in a

single evening by recruiting comics to perform for free at London’s

legendary Comedy Store. Star of the show was Ali G, from Channel 4’s 11

O’Clock Show.

Apart from the entrance fee, Dobrin raised money through publishing a

programme for the evening, sponsored by an array of companies, many of

them Luther Pendragon clients. Futures exchange LIFFE, Scottish Amicable

and McDonald’s all pitched in. And even El Vino, a wine bar in

Blackfriars otherwise known as the Luther Pendragon staff canteen,

pitched in.
