Help the Aged has appointed Nikki Hill as its new head of

communications. Hill replaces Betty McBride, who left the charity in

March (PR Week, 17 March) to take up the role of director of

communications at the British Heart Foundation.

Hill will report to Help the Aged director of communications Sandra

Chalmers, and will lead an estimated team of 20 people, which includes

PROs, publishing and web site staff. Her remit includes responsibility

for press and public relations, graphics and internal

communications.

Hill comes from a five-year stint at the Carers National Association,

where she was director of communications.

’There is huge potential coming up to an election to get the issue of

older people higher up on the social agenda. The parties are already

testing the water on the pensions debate,’ Hill says.

She will be responsible for formulating campaigns on key issues such as

pensions and long-term care and the importance of consultation. The PR

department also manages a number of high profile sponsorships, including

the British Gas Partnership to tackle fuel poverty and isolation.

One of the main challenges Hill faces is establishing a consistent

overall identity for the charity. ’I’ll be looking at sprucing up the

branding,’ she says.

Her appointment follows close on the heels of Help the Aged’s employment

of Julie Edwards, taken on in April (PR Week 7 April) to head special

projects management within the charity’s corporate relations unit.
