Leaving my tape recorder back at the office, Flack headed to Weber Shandwick's 2018 World Cup bid drinks reception last Tuesday.

Held at the Ivy Club to kickstart the agency's work on campaign, the soiree featured a relaxed-looking Terry Venables and a not-so-relaxed England 2018 chief of staff Simon Greenberg, fresh from handling the fallout from the Triesman expose. Shandwick EMEA CEO Colin Byrne told the crowd: 'Simon is banned from saying anything about the bid, so will be performing his speech in mime, which will be interpreted by Terry.' ...
