Consumer: Top 50 Consumer Consultancies

Despite the recession many agencies are thriving, find Cathy Wallace and Kate Magee.

In a difficult year for the consumer sector, it is impressive how many agencies achieved strong growth during 2009.

As the consumer top 50 shows, there was growth throughout the table, from the second-placed Red Consultancy right down to the agency at number 48, McKenna Townsend PR.

Freud Communications, a new entry to the league tables this year, topped the consumer list with an emphatic £22.5m of fee income in the sector.

This accounted for all of the agency's earnings in 2009. Second-placed Red was £15m behind Freuds, with a consumer income of £7.5m.

Elsewhere in the table, 2009 was a good year for consumer shops Frank PR, which grew 22 per cent, and Way To Blue, which saw income swell by 36 per cent.

Focus PR, 3 Monkeys and Eulogy, all profiled on the following pages, also flourished in the consumer sector in 2009.

But while some agencies did well, others struggled. Last year, Trimedia topped the consumer tables, before being merged into fellow Huntsworth brand Grayling.

Despite the merger, the consumer income posted by the 'new' Grayling was still 16 per cent less than the combined incomes of Grayling and Trimedia in 2008.

Other agencies feeling the pinch included Consolidated PR with a consumer income 39 per cent lower than 2008, and consumer and luxury shop Luchford APM, which saw fee income drop 20 per cent from 2008.

However, there were some strong new entries to the consumer top 50.

These included Exposure, which came in at number three with a consumer income of £7.5m, and all-consumer shop Talk PR, which posted an income of £2.9m, placing it at number 12 in the consumer top 50.
