Opinion: From our Readers - Register must be supported by ethics

The PRCA's frustration that the new Government pledges the introduction of a statutory register of lobbyists (Letters, 21 May) is understandable, but it hardly helps the sector's case to rail against the Conservative Party for this modest change in policy position.

We need to work - and be seen to work - with the new Government to help it deliver its objectives.

A statutory register must be underpinned by a statutory code of ethical behaviour. We must avoid a situation where the credibility of statutory registration is available to agencies that refuse to act ethically.

This is by far the bigger threat to public confidence in the profession's ethics.
