The Finance and Leasing Association has called in Lowe Bell
Political to handle a massive lobbying campaign on the Government’s
Lowe Bell was hired two weeks ago on a project basis to get a clause on
the tax treatment of commercial leases amended.
The cost of the campaign is estimated at around pounds 40,000 a month,
although the FLA declined to reveal any figures.
The issue at stake is the tax treatment of leases for plant and property
- raising an extra pounds 150 million in revenue for the Government.
Critics argue that it will damage the commercial leasing industry by
making many low-cost leasing arrangements uncommercial.
It will also, argues the FLA, affect inward investment as many overseas
companies are attracted by advantageous leasing arrangements.
David Lewis, the FLA’s head of public affairs, said Lowe Bell’s role was
to advise the FLA on how best to get its message across to the
Government and Opposition.
