Anglo-Dutch publishing group Reed Elsevier has named Susanna Smart

as its new deputy director of corporate relations. Smart joined the

group’s London head office last week from a subsidiary, Reed Business

Information, where she was head of corporate communications based in

East Grinstead.

The move is part of a reshuffle of group PR jobs prior to the

appointment of a new director of corporate relations later this

year.

The vacancies were created by the departure of former director of

corporate relations Nick Jones to Lucas Varity (PR Week, 24 January).

Jones joined as deputy director in 1990 when the department was

nine-strong. It now numbers two.

Jones’ position had been temporarily filled by Smart’s former boss, Reed

Business Information’s director of corporate communications Denis Hart,

who has now returned to his old job.

The appointment also marks a return for Smart who worked at Reed

International as corporate relations executive before its merger with

Dutch firm Elsevier in 1994. In 1995 she moved to business information

company Reed Information Services as head of corporate

communications.

The business was merged a year ago with the Sutton-based trade magazine

business Reed Business Publishing, to form Reed Business

Information.

Smart stayed on in East Grinstead with her old title, but began to

report to Denis Hart in Sutton.

Smart confirmed that Reed Elsevier was expanding its corporate relations

department but said: We’ll have to wait for the arrival of the director

to see what the future plans are.’
