Regional TV news (40 per cent) and local newspapers (36 per cent) are the top two sources of information trusted to provide unbiased information about the local council or other local public bodies.
These sources come ahead of council publications (20 per cent) and council websites (23 per cent). Sixty-three per cent are happy with the amount of information about their local council or other public bodies in their local newspaper or its website, the national study involving 1,028 people by TNS-RI Omnibus revealed.
Newspaper Society communications director Lynne Anderson said: 'Local newspapers are by far the most popular media source for those who want to raise awareness of an issue or problem and, as such, they perform a unique role in upholding democracy which begins at a local level.'
Bristol City Council service director of communication and marketing Peter Holt said: 'We are really lucky in having a paper of the quality and reputation of the Bristol Evening Post.
'However, as much as we embrace new technology and social media, and however much we go straight to the citizen with our messages, the local paper still absolutely sets the agenda.'
