Samaritans back Doherty decision
Doherty: playing for charity
Kate Magee 15-May-08
Samaritans is to use controversial musician Pete Doherty to publicise a celebrity football competition this weekend.
The singer will appear at the Samaritans Celebrity Soccer Six tournament, as the charity attempts to promote its service to young people.
Samaritans defended its use of Doherty, despite him being the subject of recent negative media coverage.
Press officer Claire Duncan said: 'We are a non-judgemental organisation offering emotional support to anyone who may need it and, because of this, we wouldn't make a judgement about what Pete Doherty has been through.'
She added: 'Cup Promotions books the celebrities on the basis of what makes a good football team.'
