Nokia has handed its global comms account, worth at least £300,000, to GolinHarris.

The Helsinki-based handset maker called in the agency this week after a mammoth eight-way pitch that began in January. The brief was previously handled by The Red Consultancy.

‘GolinHarris will handle global products and services comms,' said Nokia senior comms manager Sari Lonnvist. ‘We will use it when we handle global initiatives such as product launches.'

She added that GolinHarris' primary role would be concept development.

Lexis PR holds Nokia's UK & Ireland media brief. The agency is not affected by the hire of GolinHarris.

The pitch was triggered by a recent internal restructure in which Nokia redefined its marcoms teams. In the next year, the firm is expected to launch its hotly anticipated ‘iPhone-killer'.

This week, Nokia was in the news again, saying it would pay nearly £160m to compensate workers for the closure of its mobile phone plant in Germany. It will also establish a transfer company to help staff, as 2,300 employees will lose their jobs.
