War education project brings in agency
Rememberance: 'Their past your future'
Matt Cartmell 08-May-08
The Imperial War Museum has appointed education specialist Communications Management to promote commemorative visits to sites of 20th century conflict.
'Their Past Your Future' - a programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund - is aimed at enhancing the younger generation's understanding of wartime history, national identity, remembrance and civic participation.
The museum is organising learning programmes, meetings with war veterans and use of UK museum, library and archive resources.
Trips are being planned later this year to Hiroshima in Japan and the Burma Railway in Thailand.
The team at Communications Management is led by senior consultant Becci Cussens, who was previously acting media relations manager at the Natural History Museum and press officer at the British Museum.
'We're going to raise awareness of the programme among teachers and educators by securing in-depth features in educational publications,' said Cussens. 'We're also looking to use students who go on the visits as reporters, through blogging and online video diaries.'
The Imperial War Museum is the lead partner in the programme. The other partners are the Museums, Libraries and Archives of England, the National Library of Wales, the Northern Ireland Museums Council and the Scottish Museums Council.
