FTA lobbying claims victory

The UK's freight transport lobby claimed another victory this week as Chancellor Alistair Darling once again postponed a 2p fuel-duty rise.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) had been lobbying the Chancellor extensively in the run-up to Wednesday's decision. It was supported by retained lobbying agency CDR Policy.

FTA external affairs director Geoff Dossetter revealed that the announcement came just as the FTA contacted business secretary John Hutton for a meeting.

'Hutton was rumoured to have expressed doubts on the 2p rise, so we called a meeting last week, but it is no longer necessary,' he said.

'The next step in our campaign is to get the Government to look seriously at the way it taxes fuel compared to our neighbours in the EU,' he added.
