Lobbying Target: Tony McNulty, minister for crime and policing

If the Government is on the back foot, 'bruiser McNulty' is often called upon to land a few blows on the opposition.

Ten second biography

Straight-talking McNulty's first ministerial post was overseeing neighbourhood renewal, housing and planning as a junior minister at the now-defunct Office for the Deputy Prime Minister. After a spell at the Department of Transport, he was moved to the Home Office in 2005 and put in charge of policing in 2006.

What is his background?

Educated at Salvatorian College, a Roman Catholic grant-maintained school for boys in Harrow, London. Studied political theory at the University of Liverpool before becoming a lecturer at the University of North London. Elected as MP for Harrow East in 1997.

Where does he sit politically?

McNulty is thought to be one of the brightest Blairite loyalists to be swept into power in 1997. He is unlikely to rebel against the Government and has voted in favour of Trident, ID cards, foundation hospitals and 42-day detention.

Whe he is a man to watch

McNulty is the only member of the Government who has been allowed to debate the issue of 42 days with David Davis, appearing on Sky News last weekend. This week, he has also been wheeled out to respond to growing concerns about knife crime.

Something you might not know

McNulty is married to Christine Gilbert, chief inspector at schools watchdog Ofsted.
