The warm weather has delivered Next a surprise boost in its first quarter, with sales up 5.2% - more than double the growth of best estimates -- driven by a 14.1% increase in catalogue sales.

Retailers employed 0.5% more people in the first quarter of 2011 compared to the same period last year, despite store numbers increasing 5.4%, suggesting the retail climate continues to be "difficult", according to figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
