What the financial crisis told us was that no matter how powerful a global commercial bank appears to be, it is nothing if public confidence evaporates. This was something earlier generations understood well but we had forgotten it because until three years ago it had not been an issue in our lifetime....

On Tuesday, News International executives appeared before the DCMS select committee. This followed a fraught week where the crisis accelerated and where barely a day went by without a fresh resignation.
It is difficult to analyse 'hackgate' because the story moves at such a pace. As I write Rupert and James Murdoch, and Rebekah Brooks, are preparing to be grilled by a Parliamentary select committee.

The mass circulation News of the World was felled by a newspaper with less than a tenth of its readership. Had it not died, allegedly of shame, it is a fair bet that the Sunday red top would have been selling millions for years ahead.
