The combination of an economic downturn, cheaper direct marketing channels and pressure from the green lobby has led to a 6% drop in direct mail spend, but while brands are getting better at targeting the right people, the industry still has a long way to go before it sheds its 'junk mail' tag.

Michele Lockwood, the head of direct marketing for Debenhams, has been appointed by TalkTalk to take on an equivalent role. Lockwood handled Debenhams' £8 million direct marketing budget for the UK and Ireland since 2006.

Gotyourpricecheck, an SMS price-comparison service for electrical goods, is launching next month. Consumers who text the word 'price', the make and model of an item and their location to 60706 will receive a text giving local store information and the best web price for the product.
