Ex-Edelman tech chief joins Skype

Ian Hall 20-Apr-06

Former Edelman technology director Imogen Bailey is to join Skype – the dominant firm in the burgeoning internet telephony market – in a top comms role.

Bailey confirmed she will be joining Skype –on 2 May – but denied speculation that her role would be in charge of comms across EMEA. She would not comment further.

She will be joining a company that is seen as a 'first mover' in exploiting so-called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Skype was bought last September by online auction pioneer eBay in a deal that could be worth up to £2.9bn.

The company faces the challenge of getting people to adopt its software – which allows PC users to talk for free to anyone else who downloads the same software – in the face of competition from Vonage, Microsoft and, in particular, BT.

Skype currently uses Buckinghamshire-based Six Degrees for PR.
Bailey left Edelman in January after four and a half years (PRWeek, 13 January).

She had joined Edelman – where she worked for clients including Microsoft and Orange – in 2002 from Cisco Systems, where she worked for five years.
