UK seafood body drafts in communications head

Seafish, The UK Sea Fish Industry Authority, has named a new head of comms.

James Wood joins the Edinburgh-based industry body from AON Ltd, where he worked as head of internal comms for a year. Before that he was head of comms UK and Ireland at Agilent Technologies.

Wood joins at a time when issues around sustainability come to the forefront for the UK fishing industry, as fishermen are criticised for using up marine resources.

Wood said: 'It's important to me that the seafood industry in general and fishermen in particular should be properly represented in the debate about sustainability and the marine environment.

'Working with my team, I hope to be able to deliver improvements across the board in terms of how Seafish talks to its audiences, and just as importantly, how well we listen as an organisation.'

Wood is responsible for media relations, internal comms, industry comms, the internet, the Seafish brand and design and print strategy. Wood reports to Seafish chief executive John Rutherford.

Seafish was established by the Government in 1981 and is a non-departmental public body. It represents all sectors of the UK seafood industry including fishermen, seafood farmers, fish friers, caterers and retailers.

Wood has worked for financial services and engineering firms as a senior manager in comms, including insurance company AON Ltd, Visa International and a biotechnology and telecoms company.
