Addaction recruits BBC World Service controller

Booth: will boost charity profile

Booth: will boost charity profile

BBC World Service top marketer Alan Booth has taken the top comms role at specialist drug and alcohol treatment charity Addaction.

Booth joins the charity in the newly created role of director of marketing and public affairs. He leads a team of seven and reports directly to CEO Deborah Cameron.

Booth was previously BBC World Service’s controller, marketing communication and audiences. He had been in that post for ten years.

The focus of his new role is to drive up income and boost Addaction’s public profile and lobbying role. It comes at a time of rapid growth for the charity, which has seen its annual income treble to almost £30m over the past five years. It is currently promoting its work with the families of drug addicts, which will involve disseminating research results. It is also involved in consultations over the new national drugs strategy, which is due to be unveiled next year.

The appointment follows a restructure of the charity’s communications teams, under which fundraising and communications were joined in the hope of creating more impact in campaigns. Booth will manage both  teams.

He replaces Jill Rawlins, who has been interim director of communications since last October. Rawlins is currently still at the charity for a handover period, but is on the hunt for a new role.
