Rijke takes top comms job at Osteoporosis society

The National Osteoporosis Society has appointed its first public and external aff­airs director.

The charity has raided the Environment Agency for its head of stakeholder relations Nick Rijke.

The charity’s CEO Claire Severgnini said Rijke would take the lead on government relations, European affairs and campaigns functions.

Rijke, who started last week, said: ‘The National Osteoporosis Society is determined to raise the profile of a disease that affects millions, but has not yet rec­eived the attention and the services to match. Our challenge is to make that happen, through vibrant campaigns and assertive advocacy.’

Rijke has spent more than two years as head of stakeholder relations for the Environment Agency, working on water management throughout the UK and the nuclear industry.

He previously worked as a campaigns manager for the Liberal Democrats and as a senior researcher to David Rendel MP.

Three million people are estimated to be at risk of osteoporosis in the UK and the National Osteoporosis Society is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the disease.
