He replaces Leigh Bulmer, associate director and provincial sales manager of Trinity Mirror's regional sales house Amra.
Adrian Johnson, owner of PR agency Umpf, will replace Chris MacKenzie, managing director of Leeds-based marketing agency The Whole Caboodle, as vice-chairman of the association.
Ainley said the YPA had recently expanded its committee as part of a drive to develop the organisation.
The YPA was founded in 1923 and claims to be the oldest publicity association in the UK.
