Scottish Media Group, under the spotlight this week after its
former chairman Gus Macdonald was given a post as Scottish industry
minister, has appointed Callum Spreng as its first director of corporate
affairs.
Spreng joins from insurance company General Accident where he was
communications head. His appointment marks the upgrading of the
communications function at Scottish Media. Previously the most senior
post was held by Bob Tomlinson, who has left his post as public affairs
manager to return to broadcast journalism at Scottish Media.
Scottish Media is the fourth-largest company in the ITV network with its
ownership of Scottish TV, which makes programmes such as Taggart.
In addition to STV, Scottish Media owns newspapers such as the Herald
and Evening Times in Glasgow.
General Accident was recently merged with Commercial Union to form
CGU.
Spreng said that his move was unrelated to the merger: ’It just happened
to coincide with the opportunity to move to Scottish Media, which was
too good to miss,’ he said.
Spreng’s former role at has been split internally between Tony Clarry
and Lynne Gray. Clarry is human resources and communications director
for UK Group Insurance at CGU while Gray is director -
communications.
At Scottish Media, Spreng takes charge of a corporate affairs department
including two press officers. The company retains Brunswick for
financial PR.
