Taking Action ... Survival International/ActionAid vs Vedanta Resources

The lowdown

Eighty protesters from ActionAid and Survival International demonstrated outside British mining firm Vedanta Resources' AGM last week. They were joined by human rights campaigner Bianca Jagger, musician Nitin Sawhney and Dongria Kondh tribe's representative Sitaram Kulisika. ActionAid bought a single share for Kulisika so he could attend the AGM and make his voice heard. Jagger called on investors to rethink their involvement with Vedanta. Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy sent a message of solidarity to the protesters.

Why the protest?

The group wants Vedanta to stop its plans to build a bauxite mine on a mountain in India, which is sacred to the Dongria Kondh tribe. ActionAid said the destruction of an equivalent cultural site would not be tolerated in the UK.

How Vedanta responded

Vedanta said the Indian supreme court had taken account of local people's views and approved its plans. It also said the project would bring benefits.

A story on the BBC website stated: 'Critics say the Vedanta operation is a social and environmental disaster.' An article in The Guardian focused on how the Church of England has been asked to use its investor status to stop the mining plans.
