She will take a lead role in expanding the title across the continent and growing its digital content.
Next month, she will oversee the transition to an integrated London newsroom, as the Journal Europe’s editorial and online teams move over from Brussels.
She will be based in London and reports to managing editor Robert Thomson.
Wheatcroft previously worked with Thompson when she was business and city editor of The Times for almost a decade.
She has also launched trade title Retail Week and was deputy city editor of the Mail on Sunday.
Most recently Wheatcroft has been non-executive director at Barclays and property firm Shaftesbury.
