The Radio Council will comprise the BBC, GMG, Global Radio, Bauer Media and RadioCentre, which represents the interests of the remaining commercial radio operators.

As part of efforts to generate interest in digital audio broadcasting (DAB) stations, The Radio Council will oversee the development of a BBC iPlayer-style online radio player to stream live radio stations from across the UK.

Over the final three months of 2008, digital radio accounted for just over 18% of all UK listeners, up from 16.6% over the same quarter in 2007.

Davie's a role will rotate annually between the BBC and commercial operators.
