Polling Station - The killer app
Staff, Media Week, Wednesday, 11 March 2009, 9:30am,
Traditional media owners must engage in the fight to develop the killer app.
With Apple claiming 500 million iPhone apps have been downloaded to date, the need to be part of the market is clear.
But how many traditional media owners are making the effort? Global has launched a number of stations, including Capital and Xfm, while the Telegraph and ITN have launched news services. But where are the rest?
There are an estimated 53,000 apps already developed, but while traditional media owners are busy lamenting the likes of Facebook, Last.fm, MySpace et al for siphoning audience and revenues, it is the latter companies that are consistently the first to explore the potential of new outlets.

METHODOLOGY: Media Week ran the question "How many iPhone apps have you downloaded?" across Facebook, targeting UK consumers, on Friday, 6 March. The chart represents only those people who said they owned an iPhone - 30% (686 people) of total respondents.
