NICE chairman Sir Michael Rawlins spoke about the body's future plans at the Pharmaceutical Marketing Society's first annual lecture last week.

Sir Michael suggested NICE's remit could be extended so that the body becomes involved in screening and immunisation. It could also include commissioning guides, a scientific advice service, an extended appraisal programme, enhanced guidelines programmes and making NHS evidence accessible through a portal.

'If the areas that NICE could look at go ahead then it is going to become a far more important stakeholder for PR professionals,' said Advocate Policy & Public Affairs Consulting MD Jamie Holyer.
