The trouble with private members clubs in London is that they are either painfully trendy or else full of old Tories asleep in armchairs. This presents a dilemma for the discerning public affairs professional wanting to have lunch with clients in an informal and discreet but upwardly mobile ambience.
Step forward Morton's. Far enough away from the chaos of West End retail outlets but close enough to the Westminster village, the club has everything the modern comms executive could wish for, including an atmospheric ground-floor bar and an exquisite restaurant on the first floor offering an excellent selection of seasonal dishes.
Unlike many London eateries, where you sometimes feel like a packed sardine on a corporate conveyer belt, there is ample space and privacy. The club also boasts private rooms that are ideal for hosting discreet breakfasts and dinners with members of Her Majesty's Government, and a lounge room on the upper floor.
So many of the best ideas in this world seem so obvious that when they are implemented everyone asks why someone else didn't think of it first. The fact is that they didn't, and credit must go to where credit is due.
