Consumer spending still strong on magazines

LONDON - UK consumers are spending around £2bn a year buying magazines, an increase of 72% from 10 years ago, according to a Periodical Publishers Association survey.

The survey, published to coincide with the PPA's consumer PR initiative Magazine Week this week, found UK retailers sold 20m magazines each week, which equates to 28 magazines every second of every day.

Some 23% of those surveyed spent more than £10 a month on magazines and on average, each magazine is read for 54 minutes in total.

However, the survey did not contain only good news for the magazine market, with 36.9% of people surveyed saying they read fewer magazines than 10 years ago, compared with 32.9% of people who said they read more titles.

The news follows last month's magazine ABC results, which revealed declining circulation figures for several key sectors, including men's lifestyle.

The growth of the internet may be affecting the men's market, as the survey revealed 44.1% of men, compared with 36.6% of women, said online growth had changed their magazine buying patterns.

The survey was conducted by Tickbox.net with a sample size of 1,115 people.

Magazine Week is a PPA initiative to promote the industry and generate sales.

As part of the campaign, the PPA has planned a "flashmob" event at Waterloo Station at 6.30 tonight, in which it hopes a mob of people will turn up and read a magazine for two minutes in the station. A Facebook group, Flashmob - Mass Magazine Read, has been formed to increase the turn-out.
