Coffee Republic eyes extensions

Coffee Republic is considering launching into retail markets such as pizzas and organic food.

The coffee-shop firm has trademarked the names Pizza Republic, Spice Republic and Organic Republic, although a spokeswoman said any plans would not be implemented for at least 12 months because the company is concentrating on positioning itself as a 'coffee/deli' brand.

Coffee Republic was a pioneer of US-style coffee shops in the UK, but nearly collapsed in 2001 due to over-expansion. In 2003, founder and chief executive Bobby Hashemi started to alter the business model from wholly-owned coffee shops to 'delis' run by franchisees. About 10 of its 60 stores still operate under the Coffee Republic Deli concept.

Last year, the firm unveiled its 'All fresh' commitment that sandwiches and salads sold in its deli stores are made fresh in its kitchens daily.
