The classic 1939 film, based on L Frank Baum's book, is returning to UK cinema screens in digitally remastered form.
- The original film was one of the most expensive made at the time of its release, costing MGM $2.7m. It won three Academy Awards.
- It took eight months to remove dirt and scratches from the original three-strip Technicolor negatives. It took 250 hours just to clean the dust off.
- The costume worn by Bert Lahr as The Cowardly Lion is made of real lion pelts. It is being auctioned on eBay this week and is estimated to fetch up to £300,000.
