RSPCA fights for bird import ban

PR Week UK, Wednesday, 22 November 2006, 7:00pm,

The RSPCA is preparing a final push to force a permanent ban on wild bird imports in the EU.

A temporary ban was introduced in 2005 to halt the potential spread of bird flu. That is due to expire on 31 December and the wildlife body is lobbying for a permanent ban on welfare grounds.

Press officer Julie Stainton said the charity had teamed up with European animal welfare groups and was visiting MEPs to ‘keep the pressure on'.

The RSPCA is also using a report published today (23 November) by the European Food Safety Authority to bolster its case.
