Safeway is further breaking down the increasingly blurred barriers on
the high street with news that it is setting up a dedicated travel
booking service.
From the new year, holders of Safeway’s ABC loyalty card scheme will be
able redeem points for discounts on any holiday from the major travel
firms.
By collecting 300 points, customers could save pounds 40 off a pounds
400 holiday, whereas a cashback option would amount to pounds 3. Backing
the promotion will be a pledge that if customers find the same holiday
cheaper Safeway will refund twice the difference.
The phone service, run by Page & Moy, will be branded the Safeway
Holiday Line and is designed to lock customers into its five million-
trong loyalty scheme. Safeway expects a peak redemption of 5000
holidays a month.
Next year Tesco and Sainsbury’s are launching financial services and
Asda is looking at selling gas and electricity in its stores.
