Let those without sin cast the first stone
PR Week UK, Friday, 03 November 2006, 12:00am,
Your contention that 'Bogus bloggers will always be found out' (Leader, 20 October) made me laugh out loud. If you want to bring tears to my eyes follow it up with a leader headlined 'PR renounces third-party endorsement (TPE) tactics'.
Blogging is nothing more or less than a 21st-century delivery system for TPE. The modern history of PR practice is littered with exposures of sharp TPE practice. But this hasn't stopped it.
Did exposure of Edward Bernays' use of women's liberation figures to promote Virginia Slims diminish his professional standing?
No, it generated new business and peer recognition as the 'father of PR'. The crime it seems is not doing it but being caught.
While delivery of TPE continues to fill PR practitioners' pockets and satisfies client expectations, it will remain a much-used tool.
Throwing stones at a colleague who has been caught at it smacks of hypocrisy.
