Letter - Blogs alone will fail to cure voter apathy

PR Week UK, Friday, 20 October 2006, 12:00am,

Politicians and political PROs are right to embrace the benefits of new media, such as blogs ('Meet the kings of political blogs,' 6 October).

But those who think this will be a quick-fix solution for engaging with a lost electorate and youth will be sorely mistaken. In order to be seen as relevant, politicians must be more honest and upfront in their communications.

Blogs and other social media can help parties break through voter apathy if they invest time and knowledge to build transparent networks for political engagement and campaigning. The real solution to this problem requires a sea-change in political thinking rather than simply shoe-horning new technology into the existing political malaise.
