Marketing, Thursday, 12 December 1996, 12:00am,
Political parties will be allowed to advertise on railway stations and Railtrack roadside advertising sites for the first time since the railways were privatised.
Political parties will be allowed to advertise on railway stations and
Railtrack roadside advertising sites for the first time since the
railways were privatised.
Until now, political advertising has been banned from all sites on
Railtrack property.
Outdoor advertising contractor Maiden Outdoor, which sells the sites on
behalf of Railtrack, will now be able to sell 90% of its 48-sheet poster
sites to political advertisers on the sites lining the tracks, and on
the majority of UK railway stations in the run-up to the general
election.
All ads will be subject to copy approval by Railtrack or the relevant
train company. And all ads will have to observe the Railtrack Code of
Advertising Acceptance.
This agreement does not include sites on the London Underground, which
is still state-owned and prevented from carrying political advertising.
TDI Advertising, which sells sites for the Underground, is putting
together a marketing initiative to promote the Underground as a
‘political free zone’.
