Mobile media company 3 is to produce a handbook in association with Central St. Martin's College, London, to offer guidance on producing purpose-built content for mobile phones.

Students will take part in trying to identify unique opportunities offered by mobile for filmed material such as music videos, TV and film. The project will identify the challenges of filming for a screen typically two inches by two inches and the problems of shrinking footage originally designed for a TV or cinema screen.

Anthony Lilley, chief executive of Magic Lantern and the man behind Channel 4 documentary channel Four Docs, is backing the project. He said: "The advent of 3G mobiles means many people will be carrying media around in their pocket. The creative responsibilities of this new medium are enormous. I can see it growing into a multi-million pound industry very quickly."
